Ama Wheelies is registered as a NPO in terms of the Non-
Organizations Act as a section 21 company registration
no 2008/021003/08, specializing in the needs of
quadriplegics. A quadriplegic is a person who became
disabled, due to an injury to the spinal cord or illness,
losing full or partial use of all 4 limbs and requiring
physical help 24 hours per day. Few institutions cater for
quads and many quads end up in old age homes.
The Quadriplegic Centre will be a Viable, Self Sustaining Home. The Quadriplegics living in the centre are given the opportunity to dignify themselves working in rewarding but sheltered work opportunities. They then operate various small businesses, developed in consideration of Quadriplegics and their limited abilities. A bonus to the Lydenburg community is that it is envisage that 100 new permanent employment opportunities will be created, in one of the poorest Provinces of South Africa. Construction is planned that will be environmental friendly.
Running costs are curtailed by assigning Residents Responsibilities and Duties pertaining to the daily management of the Centre; taking care of the administrative duties, saving on costs with each resident receiving specific task within his/her capabilities to take care of.
The major obstacle facing Ama Wheelies is the lack of finance and capital required to get started. Once operational the home will be viable however the challenge is to find the capital.
