Who Are We?

Ama Wheelies is a centre with homely atmosphere, providing accommodation and rehabilitation; specializing in the needs of quadriplegicsthat is a wheelchair bound person with spinal cord injuries who became disabled, due to an injury to the spinal cord or illness, losing full or partial use of all hands and feet and requiring physical help 24 hours per day.

Additionally Ama Wheelies provide rehabilitation and training for family members enabling quadriplegics to live a life with their families. The home is for persons such as Moses, shot as a youngster for his cellphone in school, Barry, hijacked for his car on the way to work, and Sarah who was paralyzed in a freak accident at the age of 12; together with 45 fellow quadriplegics, also not able to use their hands and feet, we have started a quadriplegic centre here in Lydenburg Mpumalanga where we can work and take care of ourselves.

Ama Wheelies is registered both as a NPO with the Department of Social Services (NPO 083-504) and in terms of the Non-Profit Organizations Act as a section 21 company, registration number 2008/021003/08. Ama Wheelies aim to be financially independent but at this early stage, we still need donations to help with the setup and establishment costs.

The quadriplegic centre, situated on a farm outside Lydenburg is a wildlife lover's dream; presently it is a chicken farm, with sufficient land for cattle and pigs. Quadriplegics not only manage the farm; the will operate various small businesses, developed in consideration of quadriplegics and their limited abilities, thus dignigying themselves working in rewarding but sheltered work opportunities. A bonus to the Lydenburg community, is that it is evisaged that 30 new permanent employment opportunities will be created, in one of the poorest provinces in South Africa. Construction is planned that will be environmentally friendly.

Running costs are curtailed by assigning residents responsibilities and duties pertaining to the daily management of the centre; taking care of the administrative duties, saving costs with each resident receiving specific tasks within his/her capabilities to take care of. The quadriplegics working and supporting the home is rewarded in receiving subsidised housing.

The new home boasts its own constitution, resolving as a multi-racial organization to work on improving life for the quadriplegic community and we welcome you to come visit!
